Self-Portrait

People are not my favorite subject to draw. I became used to my own face over the years. I want to share this self-portrait from the period shortly after I earned my master's degree. As an art therapist, I know the House-Tree-Person assessment comes in handy. I created this reflection of myself after my internship ended and I smoothly secured my first “big girl job.”

My hair has a fun habit to change colors, mostly purple, which showed growth here. I prefer my hair to cover my ears, but because I listen all day, I must keep them clear of distractions. Sometimes my ears become the distraction themselves. My knees also have a habit to pop, and I often sit in this butterfly position. This piece was a reminder to myself that I am the calm just as much as I am the storm.
